Black Alumni Chapter honors ECU graduates

Three outstanding East Carolina University alumni were honored with awards Saturday by the ECU Alumni Association’s Black Alumni Chapter (BAC).


The awards, presented during the Black Student Success Summit, celebrate individuals who demonstrate leadership, performance and excellence in three distinct award categories.


Laura Marie Leary Elliott Courageous Leader Award

Greg Hedgepeth ’08 ’12 received the Laura Marie Leary Elliott Courageous Leader Award.


The Laura Marie Leary Elliott Courageous Leader Award bears the name of Laura Marie Leary, the first full-time African American student to graduate from East Carolina University. The award recognizes noteworthy and distinctive achievements made by alumni who have graduated from East Carolina University. The recipient of the award should demonstrate significant accomplishments or promise in their fields, offer inspiration and encouragement as models for principled leadership, and exhibit civic, cultural, or charitable involvement within their communities.
